Swapping a 3 speed for a 5

After replacing the rear end with a stock V8 rear with 2.79 gears, the poor inline 6 engine just feels like a dog behind that 3 speed transmission. I worry if I have to start out on a hill, it won’t be able to go. That pushed me into using the 4 cylinder T5 transmission I have in the garage for this car. I am hoping that the gearing in this T5 means I wont have to replace the rear gears later as well. Gear math isn’t my thing, so I will just have to wait and see.

Retrosound plus odds and ends

After driving home from the alignment, I could tell I had some tuning to do. In this case, it was the shifter. With me being tall, I have my knees kind of around the wheel. The brake pedal is currently too high, compounding the problem, but I cant step on it without moving my knee to the right. Well, with the shifter arm I have, I can’t hit the brakes while in second gear.

Transmission install

I haven’t posted in a while because all of the projects are either half done, or hard to get pictures of. With the transmission, working in my garage without a lift makes it very difficult to get a picture. In addition, like every project with this car, there is always one more thing to finish, and I hate to write up half done projects.

T-5 Transmission Starting Point

My last major project/purchase for the Mustang is the transmission. I picked up a complete conversion kit from Modern Driveline, who specializes in Mustang conversions. I went with a 5 speed manual T-5 which is mid 90’s technology. The 5th gear is an overdrive which should make it rev lower while driving at freeway speeds, leaving the lower gears for the fun.
