The next big piece off the pile in the garage is the alternator and bracket. It had the original 2G alternator on it when I got it, and I took it off as an assembly. The assembly included the bracket, the alternator and the tensioner. All of it looked sufficiently 30 years old, and original.

Since deciding to go with the automatic for the fastback, I have had to change a few plans and find a few new parts. My project list is influenced by the closest things in the pile of parts in the garage, so I went with the pedal assembly next.

It seems the 65 had a unique motor mount unlike the rest of the classic mustangs. Since I have them, I decided to clean them up and use them. The other option was to buy the 66+ mounts and mounting plates. Or, my crazy motor purchases may make me buy drop mounts like I put in the 67 coupe. So, I started with the most economical option first.

As I dig out the pile of parts for the 65, I found another one that I can clean up and put on the car. The wiper motor and assembly is pretty self contained and needs to go under the dash early, so I knocked that out.

With the engine back in the garage, I need to start assembling it. I plan on using the original serpentine system, so I have to clean up a bunch of parts and get them back in place. It’s a good thing I took a bunch of pictures, because tearing it down a year ago left a lot of gaps in my memory. I put all the bolts in one bin, but figuring out which is which took a bit of digging through pictures.

After an extended period of time, I was finally able to pick up my engine from the automotive machine shop. Unfortunately, they started backed up when I dropped it off, then the owner (one man shop) had some health issues, backing up everything. He is doing well and finally caught up with some projects. There is always a wait and I was a few months in line before I could drop it off, which I read as a good sign for quality output. Based on the engine in the coupe with no issues, I am 1 for 1, with #2 looking like a win.

While the convertible is pretty solid, it does have a few items that need attention. The most pressing is the convertible top. It is pretty ragged and has several holes in it. While it is a summer car and the top is down for the most part, its pretty important to me to have a structurally sound top for the times where unexpected weather happens, or even just needing to park it outside over night at some point. So, that’s project number one.

I have made some progress after returning from my trip. The most recent objective was to get it back on the ground, and off the jack stands. I will probably need it on them again when I do the fuel and brake lines, but for now, its on the ground.

My original headlight fender extensions were broken. The grille and headlights were included as a complete assembly when I picked it up. There were also replacement headlight fender extensions, but they were also damaged. Since I wanted the GT grille with fog lights, I decided to just rebuild the grille with new parts for things that were broken or didn’t match.

Talking with my brother in law a few weeks ago, he mentioned he is trying to figure out what to do with his dad’s mustang. His dad passed away last year and left the mustang he had for 20 years to Eric and his sister. I encouraged him to keep it and we could get it back to a driver so he could enjoy it like his dad did. This week we picked it up and brought it home.
