My list of big projects to get Derek’s coupe back on the road is getting short. I think most of the engine work is done, but I wont start it without an exhaust. With a flat tappet cam, it requires a 20-30 minute break in on first start, which I wont be doing without exhaust. With that, I took it to the local exhaust and welding shop to have his exhaust kit installed.

Derek’s 67 is close to done, but I haven’t been home to work in the shop for quite a while. I would like to get it back on the road so I can free up some shop space to ultimately get back to focusing on the 65. Currently, he needs the clutch connected to the pedal, a new driveline, and an exhaust. At that point, it should be ready to start and figure out what needs attention to make it road worthy. Starting from the front, I decided to get the clutch working first.

After replacing the rear end with a stock V8 rear with 2.79 gears, the poor inline 6 engine just feels like a dog behind that 3 speed transmission. I worry if I have to start out on a hill, it won’t be able to go. That pushed me into using the 4 cylinder T5 transmission I have in the garage for this car. I am hoping that the gearing in this T5 means I wont have to replace the rear gears later as well. Gear math isn’t my thing, so I will just have to wait and see.

With the 8 inch rear end done, the next step is to get it under the car. I thought I would do the front and rear as two separate projects, but circumstances pulled it into one mega upgrade. All good in the end though.

The first thing my son said when I brought home his ’67 was that we need to put a bigger motor in it. Our children do become us. I did the same thing and ended up with no engine in the car for many years. I am going to do my best to help him avoid that. To that end, rather than put more work in the front or rear brakes that are on the car, I am working on putting a V8 5 lug setup on it. For the rear, that means recovering an old 8 inch rear end Randy had growing into the earth.

The 65 project came with a pile of new and used brake parts. There are what appears to be the original drum fronts including the whole assembly from control arm out. There is also a pair of disc spindles/rotors and caliper mounts as well as a pair of hubs I can’t identify. For the disc spindles, there is a pair of brand new rotors, calipers, and tie rod ends. A good start to swapping over to disc.

When I purchased the car, it did not appear to have a leaking cowl issue. Because I didn’t think it had a leaking cowl, I was fine leaving it outside in the rain. Well, I soon realized that the interior is becoming a swamp with all the water soaking into the carpet. I need to figure this out and find a stop gap immediately.

I have a goal of fixing the small things on my son’s 67 coupe so he can drive it back east for his daily driver while he is in the Army. Some are cosmetic, like the door hinge. The driver doesn’t have a pin for the door stop to work and holding it open with a jack stand is getting annoying while I am working on other things. So, time to replace or repair the hinge.

I previously did a write-up when I rebuilt my parking brake on my 67 coupe, I didn’t replace the handle as mine was in fine condition. With my son’s 67 coupe, the handle was broken off so I went ahead and rebuilt the mechanism and replaced the handle. There are a few details I learned, so I thought I would share.
